Dear Friend of Adult Learning

The Adult Learner’s Week (ALW) will be organised in Finland for the 11th time during the week 40, 29.9.–5.10.2008. This year’s theme is gaining a good life by learning.

A Wealth of Events and Activities
Many colourful events will be organised to encourage organisations and others involved in the field of adult education to join in. Event venues and arenas might include libraries, market places, seminars, lectures, study and guidance points, cultural performances and carnivals – the sky is the limit! A list of events is being compiled at www.aoviikko.org/sivut/tapahtumat.htm.

Background to the Adult Learner’s Week
The Adult Learner’s Week was initiated by Unesco and is celebrated in more than 50 countries. In Finland ALW was organised for the first time in 1998. The purpose of the week is to provide information, motivation and inspiration, to activate, challenge and invite to cooperation. Each Adult Learner’s Week has a unique theme and programme. However, underlying the entire project is the idea of adults’ ability to learn at all life stages, the benefits of learning in working life, and learning as a source of joy and a cherished hobby.

Information on ALW and the opening seminar is coordinated by Adult Education Co-ordinating Unit AIKE Oy, Finnish Diverse Learners’ Association, and the Finnish Adult Education Association.

The week is sponsored by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Labour.
