Adult learners take over the Old Student House!

The national main event will take place on October the 6th–7th. The venue is beautiful and historical Old Student House situated in the heart of Helsinki.

The whole building is turned into an oasis of education: schools, organizations and educational institutes offer demonstrations, courses and counseling. The two days will be filled with interesting and entertaining program. On the main stage we will see well-known actors like Lorenz Backman and Juha Veijonen, famous psychologist Pirkko Lahti, professor of educational psychology Kirsti Lonka, a grand old lady of Finnish fashion Annikki Karvinen and Julio Romero with his charming salsa orchestra. The current status of the economy is paid attention to in the panel discussions on Finnish enterprises and on life after denouncements. Our brilliant hosts are award-winning actress Elina Knihtilä and the soul-man himself, Veeti Kallio. The doors are open for public free of charge.

In the year 2009 “Vanha” will be taken over by adult learners!

Touring and Learning in Switzerland

The organizers of this year's main event visited in Switzerland in the beginning of September. Here you find information on the event, 24 Hours of Learning.

Background to the Adult Learner’s Week
The Adult Learner’s Week was initiated by Unesco and is celebrated in more than 50 countries. In Finland ALW was organised for the first time in 1998. The purpose of the week is to provide information, motivation and inspiration, to activate, challenge and invite to cooperation. Each Adult Learner’s Week has a unique theme and programme. However, underlying the entire project is the idea of adults’ ability to learn at all life stages, the benefits of learning in working life, and learning as a source of joy and a cherished hobby.

AIKE Oy (Developing Company of Adult Education) is in charge of organizing the week and its main event accompanied by associations VSY (Association for Non-formal Adult Education in Finland) and EOL (Finnish Diverse Learners’ Association). The campaign is supported by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Employment and the Economy. The main partner is the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat.
